Matt Watnemo

Matt is a Clinical intern attending graduate school at Bethel University for Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Matt received his undergraduate degree from the University of Northwestern-St. Paul in 2015 for 5-12 Social Studies Education. Since graduating from college, Matt has accumulated work experience in teaching, coaching, playing basketball overseas while volunteering with a church plant, and has worked the past two and a half years in social services in various roles.

Matt’s counseling philosophy stems from the belief that every human being has value, tremendous potential, is complex, and is uniquely him or herself. Matt’s desire is to help people who have been knocked down in life to experience healing, growth, acceptance without judgment, and an environment filled with authenticity and hopefulness. Through taking a collaborative approach, Matt is passionate about empowering others towards an increased clarity of self, purpose, and sense of belonging in his or her community. Matt works with individuals who are 16+ years old and his areas of interest include anxiety, depression, communication, life changes/adjustments, grief/loss, stress management, men’s issues, pornography, obsessive-compulsive, faith-related concerns and questions, self-esteem issues, anger management, and conflict resolution. Matt uses a variety of therapeutic approaches which include Person-Centered Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy. Matt’s faith and values stem from a Christian worldview, namely that Jesus Christ is his Lord and Savior. One passage from the Bible that has encouraged and challenged Matt over the years is from Psalm 34:8-”Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him.” Matt is open to integrating a client’s faith and spirituality into therapy to the extent that the client is willing, comfortable, and finds it beneficial to the therapeutic process.

In his free time, Matt enjoys playing sports, running, reading, kayaking, and hiking outside with his wife of five years and black lab named Toby. His main hobbies consist of team sports (especially basketball), spending time with friends and family, outdoor activities, and eating any and every kind of pizza.
